Choosing a brand by owning what I already am.

A decision log. Five directions, two built finalists, and the reasons behind each cut.

Start from what is already true, not from a mood board.

I did not ask what looks good. I asked what is already true about me, then gave each trait a direction.

Pick the direction I can own, then borrow only the structure.

I picked 1 and 4 together. Direction 4 was polished and familiar, but it is largely Apple's visual language. Direction 1 was distinctive and personal.

The rule: take the structure of 4, the identity of 1. Polish can be borrowed. Identity cannot.

Swap the official stamp for a human hand.

I replaced the 도장 seal with brush calligraphy. I tested four wordmarks: Nanum Brush Script in hangul, East Sea Dokdo (dry brush), Pinyon Script in Latin, and Mrs Saint Delafield as a signature paired with Song Myung hangul. I chose the brush hangul.

Why: a seal is an official object. Brush strokes carry motion and small imperfections, so the mark shows a person behind it.

Take the color out, then find the right white.

I asked for black and off-white only, no accent. Then I pushed the white lighter, twice.

Ink stayed #111110 throughout.

Lesson: off-white is a spectrum, and the right one only shows up in the real page, not in a swatch.

Build both finalists instead of judging mockups.

Mockups flatter. Real pages show spacing, contrast, and feel. So both finalists became working pages.

  • Ink: monochrome, brush wordmark, serif headings.
  • Desktop Craft: Apple-style polish, system blue, colored window buttons, a glass menu bar.

I also explored four takes on the desktop metaphor: Finder desktop, one open document, terminal, and a Spotlight launcher.

Small rules came out of the process.

  • The brush face is for the name only. A serif and Poppins carried everything else.
  • Stone #8A8780 failed contrast for small text, at about 3.3:1. Small text used #6B6862 instead.

What happened next.

  • On Oct 12, the Stamp design became the whole site. Ink and Desktop Craft were retired. Stamp is quieter, and the work is one scroll away instead of behind windows.
  • The wordmark is a public Google font, so anyone can type the same thing. Next step: a hand-brushed 김채운, traced to SVG, so the mark is mine alone.
